2013 Mazda Atenza/6

Mazda has unveiled the final version of the future Mazda Attenza (known outside Japan as the Mazda6), based on the Mazda Takeri concept car. It has been designed by Ikuo Maeda, designing director of Mazda.

The car’s interior is similar to that of the Mazda Takeri concept car, a futuristic dashboard and futuristic seats, as in the Mercedes Concept-A, the concept version of the future Mercedes A Class hatchback.

Ikuo Maeda has also designed the Mazda Demio (Mazda2 outside Japan) and the Mazda RX-8, which was discontinued in 2010 in Europe, 2011 in North America and 2012 in Japan.

The car in the beginning will have a 2.0 litre petrol engine and a 2.2 litre turbo diesel. By 2016, the car will have a 2.3 litre MPS sporty variant.

The car will also have new features such as a knee airbag and an electric handbrake.

The future Mazda Attenza/6 was born in 2007, just same time as the current Mazda Attenza/6 went on sale. The first prototype was the Mazda Taiki, a more futuristic saloon car, which could have the doors lift up. The second was unveiled in 2010 as the Mazda Shinari which was closer to the Takeri prototype. The third prototype, the Takeri prototype was unveiled in 2011, similar to the final version and the final version being unveiled in May 2012.
